Exploring Ancestral Trauma: My Journey into Family Constellation

I’ve recently been exploring the fascinating world of Family Constellation and Ancestral Trauma, and it’s been remarkable to see how much of what lies beyond our conscious mind can surface and guide us toward resolution.

Family Constellations(FC) is a therapeutic method rooted in group dynamics, first developed by the German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger in the ’80s. It’s grounded in quantum entanglements and morphic fields.

FC helps us understand the undercurrents of our relationships, why we behave the way we do, and how we can heal from generational wounds. Think of it as the science of relationships.

In FC, we refer to these deep-rooted family dynamics as "entanglements." These invisible cords tie us to our past, sometimes reaching back generations. Have you ever noticed how certain issues or conflicts keep popping up in your family? That’s an entanglement at work.

What strikes me most about this work is its profound simplicity. Even though this is a new realm for me, it resonates deeply with my core philosophies. One belief that I hold close is that there are many forces in life beyond our control, and the key to peace lies in honoring them. The more we try to fight, control, or manipulate these forces—despite our best intentions—the more they remind us of our place.

Byron Katie beautifully encapsulates this idea: "There are only three kinds of business in the universe: mine, yours, and God's. Whose business are you in?" Our job is to stay in our own business. Even when we step into others' business with the intention of helping, we often find ourselves getting entangled.

Take, for example, the desire to prevent a loved one from feeling sad. No matter how much we want to control or manage their emotions, how they feel is ultimately not our business—it’s theirs. The more we try to control, the more we may inadvertently sabotage the situation. But when we let go of the need to control, things often naturally fall into place.

Family Constellation work has deepened my understanding of this concept. It reveals the unconscious ways we involve ourselves in others’ business and the hidden loyalties we carry. Often, we inherit the traumas of our ancestors as an unconscious loyalty to them. The struggles we face—whether in business, relationships, or personal growth—can sometimes be traced back to these deep-seated ancestral connections.

I’ve seen instances where someone’s fear of failure or self-sabotage in business was linked to an ancestor who lost everything during a significant historical event, like the partition of the country. At first, these connections can be surprising, but over time, I’ve come to see the simplicity and truth in them.

It’s common to hear someone say, "How can I enjoy myself when someone I know is going through a tough time?" This reflects a fear many of us share—that by allowing ourselves to thrive, we are somehow betraying those who struggled before us. These fears, whether conscious or unconscious, can hold us back from living our fullest lives.

As a coach, my role is to help clients identify and process these patterns and loyalties. By doing so, they can release both conscious and subconscious entanglements and step into the fullness of their lives.

Marianne Williamson beautifully reminds us, "Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you."

If you’re curious about how Family Constellation work unfolds, the Netflix series Another Self offers a light and engaging introduction to this powerful modality.
